Dont be shocked you read it right . The minimum download speed that every broadband customer should get is going to be 2mbps. But dont be over excited you will have to wait till that happens. you will have to wait for another four years before getting 2mbps.
TRAI that is Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had recommended to the government with regards to the the broadband plan speeds. Currently the minimum speed that broadband users are supposed to get his 512 kbps. It was revised in January. Before January the minimum broadband speed needed was 256 kbps. In a long-awaited move, it has noted that effective January 1, 2015, the stipulated download speed for any broadband connection, either wireline or wireless, will be 2 Mbps (again bits, not bytes)
According to TRAI’s recommendations on the National Broadband Plan submitted on December 8, 2010, a broadband connection is a data connection using any technology that is able to support interactive services including Internet access and support a minimum download speed of 512 Kbps. Also, the upload speed should be atleast be half the download speed. This definition of broadband (both wireline and wireless) given in para 6.21 of the National Broadband Plan, is effective from 1st January 2011. The stipulated download speed of 2 Mbps will be effective from 1st January 2015
This may sound like wow right now but how effective is 2mbps gonna be in 4 years. The size of files that are being streamed online are getting bigger by each passing day. HD videos are big in size and even with 2mbps you might have to wait till the video buffers. But the good thing about this is that at least by 2015 people wont feel like they are on a dial up connection. It would be better if TRAI also issued some guidelines about the disconnection in internet.
