3g Technology: Explained

You have read about it in newspapers. You have heard your friends talk about. You have even seen commercials on TV. People are tweeting about it. But do you know what exactly is 3g?? You do know it is somehow related to mobile. But do you know does it work??

3g stands for Third Generation. 3g is the third generation of wireless telephone technology. Just the way we have generations in computer there are generations in mobiles too. The first wireless telephone was launched by Bell and Motorola in America way back in 1946. Which was followed by 1g that is First Generation Wireless Telephone Technology. The first 1g cellular network was launched by a company known as NTT which is located in Japan. NTT is a government owned corporation and is the leader of telecommunications in Japan. 1g was launched in 1979 in Japan. And in a couple of years the whole world followed it.

Successor of 1g was 2g or Second Generation of Wireless Telephone Technology. 2g was launched in Finland by Radiolinja in 1991. The main difference between 1g and  2g was that radio signals on 1g were analog where as radio signals on 2g were digital. 2g networks brought with them the facility of Short Messages Service (SMS), Multi Media service and Email. 2g was followed by 2.5g that brought GPRS and 2.75 that introduced EDGE.

It was in 2001 that 3g was launched commercially in Japan by NTT docomo.( The same company which launched 1g technology). The advantages of 3g over its predecessors is that it includes wide area wireless voice telephone, mobile internet access, video calls and Mobile TV. All these facilities in a mobile phone. But India was very late with 3g technology. It entered India only In 2008. It was bsnl who launched 3g in Mumbai and Delhi. The first Private-sector service provider that launched 3G services is Tata docomo, on November 5, 2010. And the second is by Reliance Communications, December 13, 2010. Vodafone Launched their 3G by mid of March,2011 . Then, Bharti Airtel launched their 3G services on 24 January 2011 in Bangalore and also launched in Delhi & Jaipur on March 4, 2011(not GSM but only USB estick). Aircel also launched 3G in Kolkata in the month of February.Idea also launched its 3G services in mid April.
