The union Minister for Communication and Information Technology of India Mr. Kapil Sibal launched two applications one was named Digital Mandi and the other was a Mobile Social Networking Platform. The Digital Mandi will enable the farmers to check the prevailing prices of crops in the market. At the inaugaration of m Powering India Mr Kapil Sibal checked the prices of apples. this application has been developed by BSNL and IIT Kanpur.
The other application launched by Mr. Kapil Sibal is a Mobile Social Networking Platform (MSNP). This new MSNP offers many possible features to develop personalized applications. With this MSNP the Service Providers can also send text messages to a selected target audience according to their choice. This target audience can be chosen according to the various factors like Gender, Age, Location and various other Demographic Statistics. Thus this MSNP will give only relevant details to the mobile subscribers.
The USP of MSNP is that it is an SMS based Application which functions on SMS and does not need any Software to be Downloaded which means no extra cost of Downloading a Software. And the MSNP functions on 2g as well as 3g phones it does not specially require a 3g enabled phone. This good keeping in mind that the 3g penetration in India is not very high. The Applications on MSNP platform can be used by all subscribers of any service providers.
This software was developed by the IIT Mumbai. The platform works in a unique manner, as the algorithm mines the call detail records available with the service provider to search for patterns in interaction between users. These patters along with the information about set of applications that a user is currently using, and what his friends like/ dislike are then analyzed to finally narrow down on a specific set of users with similar interests. Anything that is popular in a user’s “cluster” has a high probability of being liked by the users of that cluster and can be recommended to them.
