The farmers in India are known for their hard work. As opposed to their American or European Counterparts they do not get any help from machines or technology. First they have to carry out the farming activities then they have to check the prevailing rates in the market and carry out more functions like paying the loans, taking good care of their farms and protecting their farms. to much to do for a single person. But thanks to an application now the farmers will have to do one less job. The new App which has launched by Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mr.Kapil Sibal.
The application named Digital Mandi will help the farmers in knowing the prevailing rates of the crops in the market . So the farmers will not have to check the prices in the market manually he can just get the information on his mobile. The new software has been developed by BSNL with IIT Kanpur. This application on mobile is important for farmers because not only will it save them some precious time but also will enable to offer a better deal to their customers. The application will cover about 3000 products in the prevailing markets. The service also enables Text and Voice based delivery of Commodity Prices.
The service has been made available initially for the farmers of Haryana and Punjab in their own native language. The app offers farmer profile based mandi prices. It also features auto detect cell phone number. Mode and frequency of receiving the information can be selected by farmer. A multi modal access to commodity prices has been given to the user through text, image and voice responses. The application requires one time registration from the user. However, the guest users can also avail the Text and Voice Response features.
The system is multi lingual. Other unique aspects of this system are that both the queries and the retrieval are multi modal. The queries can be placed through both image and textual modalities. Information requested by the farmer is acquired from the AGMARK database. AGMARK is an ICT platform of the DMI, Ministry of Agriculture and NIC. This project is aimed at empowering the Indian farmer by providing the current mandi prices and thereby increasing his bargaining power. This scheme is operated by DMI in collaboration with State agricultural marketing boards and APMCs. Currently more than 3000 markets have been connected by the portal with plans for further expansion.
