Keeping in line with the strong growth shown previously, the Indian Mobile service providers have added over 14 million new prepaid GSM and Postpaid connection users in July. This number is much higher than 12 million additions in mobile phone plan subscribers recorded last month. The highest additions recorded by the Indian telecom sector were in January 2009, when it added close to 15 million new users which includes Prepaid GSM and postpaid mobile plan subscribers.
The number of phone connection in the country- mobile plans and landline phone plans – reached 479.04 million in July, telecom regulator TRAI said on Thursday. With 441.66 million mobile phone connections, cell phone plan users now account for close to 92% of the country’s telephone base. The growth has pushed the country’s Tele-density to 41.80%.
However, the fixed line subscriber base dipped slightly to 37.41 million in July, on account of state-owned telcos BSNL and MTNL losing some users. The broadband plan user base increased to 6.80 million in July, from 6.62 million in June this year.
Leading GSM operator Bharti Airtel led the monthly additions by adding about 2.8 million new users, taking its total subscriber base to 105 million in July compared to 102 million in June. Reliance Communications recorded the second highest and now has a subscriber base of about 82 million (Reliance GSM and Reliance CDMA).
Vodafone Essar added over 2.2 million mobile phone plan users in July; lower than 2.3 million additions recorded by the operator in July. The additions made by Vodafone India has taken its user base to 78.6 million. Idea Cellular and Spice Communications together added about 1.4 million cell phone subscribers in July, while the Mobile phone Operators added about 1.6 million in June. Idea and Spice telecom now have a subscriber base of 48.5 million.
GSM operator Aircel added 1.3-million subscriber in July, taking its total mobile subscribers base to 23.1 million. CDMA service operator Tata Teleservices added about 2.2 million users in July compared with 0.6 million additions made in June. Tata Indicom now has a subscriber base of 39.3 million users in India. The state owned telcos- BSNL and MTN-added 1.5 million and 0.03 million mobile users, respectively, in July.
