Back in 2008 it was Tata DoComo who first introduced the Pay Per Sec plan in India. Tata DoCoMo swept their rivals of their feet. Tata DoCoMo was an instant hit. Sim cards were selling like hot cakes. Literally everyone had a tata docomo card. From college goers to corporate professionals. All the service providers had to revise their plans to stand up to the high expectations, caused by tata docomo.
The impact of pay per second was such that TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India) was planning to mandate pay per second plan for all the service providers in India. But the mobile companies resented this proposal as their main profit existed in the minute plans where in subscribers were charged per minute. The main difference in pay per minute and pay per second plan is that the later is beneficial for the subscribers. The subscriber pays only for the seconds for which the call was made and not for the unused seconds.
For example: You called up your friend and spoke for 5 minutes and 20 seconds, then under the pay per minute plan you would have to pay for six minutes according to the call charges per minute. If your call charges are 1 rupee per minute you would end up paying six rupees for the call. Whereas under the per second plan, you would pay 3 rupees and twenty paise. Almost half of what you would pay in pay per minute plan.
It was about time that other service providers started with pay per second plans. Now almost every other company has its pay per sec plan. The competition went to the next level when companies started std calls at pay per second plans. This stiff competition has only resulted in subscribers enjoying low call rates on local and std calls.
One more feature of the pay per second plan is that subscribers can keep a check on their account balance. With call costs subscribers get to know what’s the exact amount of balance deducted from their prepaid balance. But when some service providers offer the pay per second free of charge some others have launched it in special packs. A special recharge of a certain amount is to be done through which the subscriber can make calls at per second rates for a limited time of a month or a year.
