A few months back, i came across a friend who bought a new “China” branded phone which had a tv antenna that could be pulled out and watch TV on. Personally this felt like a sci-fi movie where the lead character gets the latest news from the comfort of his hiding spot, all through a mobile phone. This was something i never thought was possible, that a full fledged phone had the capability to view the free-to-air channels. But such a feature needed a special phone which in turn required an extra TV chip and an antenna perhaps. 3G has now made it possible, for every 3G phone to have the same capability, using the 3G networks.

Mobile TV is the television that is viewed on small devices which are handheld, such as mobile phones or multimedia devices. The customer can either choose to watch the free channels or subscribe to premium channels, just like you would with a DTH or Satellite TV connection. The channels viewed are either through terrestrial televison or over 3G networks using IPTV streaming. Since 3G provides a fast network, most 3G enabled phone will be able to view the channels provided. This can be normal channels or video podcasts as well, which are firstly downloaded onto the device and then viewed by the customer. South Korea was the first country to have Mobile TV, with Japan at a close second. But Japan has overtaken South Korea in terms of technology and the enjoyability. Though Mobile TV has not been received well in all the countries, there are quite a few countries where travel is a part of everyday life, that have accepted Mobile TV. In India, BSNL is all set to provide Mobile TV with its new 3G networks. Though the viewing quality will highly depend on the mobile phone used and the location in the network area.

The challenges for Mobile TV are:

  • Most of the mobile devices have limited battery charge and using the TV or the 3G network can render it happless in the matter of a few hours. Sadly, the technology for batteries are not developing as fast as the mobile phones’. So using Mobile TV can have you searching for charge points from time to time, something that a person on the move won’t be comfortable with.
  • The hardware used in these mobile phones have to be powerful enough to support and display Mobile TV without any hassles. It also needs to have a good enough processor and memory to be used when buffering the video, and storage space to store those files. It will also need to have a good enough viewing screen.
  • Marketing these channels and technology is also very important, as the consumer has to be educated and coaxed to atleast give it a try.
  • Cost is also another important factor here, because the 3G networks will charge and arm and a leg for the data transferred, and Mobile TV will consume a lot of bandwidth for general usage. The cost of accessing these channels also needs to be considered.
